Transfer of Oil Royalty through an estate

Township: N/A | Range: S J WEST | Section: N/A

I am the executor of an estate that had oil royalties in Wood County West Virginia. The prior tax bills for 2018 show API#516 S J WEST LEASE and another API # 1962 S J WEST WELL. .  Elder Oil Company was the lessee. They do not answer my mail and I do not see these API listed for them. I did find ARIES PETROLEUM holding  non producing lease on 47-107-01692, so I will write them. I have yet to find API #516.

I need to transfer theses interests to the heirs so I can close the estate but am having no luck.

How do I do this?

How can I search by API # ?

These wells were drilled by the decedent's grandfather William Ernst Lang. Is there a way to search leases for his name to find missing royalty interests?

Are the lease recorded some place where I can get a copy>

Hi William, yes, you'll want to go to the county as they are the source of truth for ownership. On our paid members can search by API number and lease/well name. This may or may not include their name, it sometimes does, but the county is going to be where you'll need to go to find out what exactly they own and who now owns it. It may require some title research to figure out and make sure those royalties got transferred to the estate properly. The county may also have a copy of the lease.
